Babylon’s Idols and the True God

46 ^(A)Bel has bowed down, Nebo stoops over;
Their idols have become loads for the animals and the cattle.
The things ^[a]that you carry are burdensome,
A load for the weary animal.
²They stooped over, they have bowed down together;
They could not rescue the burden,
But ^[b]have themselves ^(B)gone into captivity.

³“^(C)Listen to Me, house of Jacob,
And all ^(D)the remnant of the house of Israel,
You who have been ^(E)carried by Me from ^[c]birth
And have been carried from the womb;
⁴Even to your old age ^(F)I ^[d]will be the same,
And even to your ^[e]^(G)graying years I will ^[f]carry you!
I have ^[g]done it, and I will bear you;
And I will ^[h]carry you and I will save you.

⁵“^(H)To whom would you liken Me
And make Me equal, and compare Me,
That we would be alike?
⁶Those who ^(I)lavish gold from the bag
And weigh silver on the scale,
Hire a goldsmith, and he makes it into a god;
They ^(J)bow down, indeed they worship it.
⁷They ^(K)lift it on the shoulder, carry it,
And set it in its place, and it stands there.
^(L)It does not move from its place.
Though one may shout to it, it ^(M)cannot answer;
It ^(N)cannot save him from his distress.

⁸“^(O)Remember this, and be ^[i]assured;
^(P)Recall it to ^[j]mind, you ^(Q)wrongdoers.
⁹Remember the ^(R)former things long past,
For I am God, and there is ^(S)no other;
I am God, and there is ^(T)no one like Me,
¹⁰Declaring the end from the beginning,
And from ancient times things which have not been done,
Saying, ‘^(U)My plan will be established,
And I will accomplish all My good pleasure’;
¹¹Calling a ^(V)bird of prey from the ^(W)east,
The man of ^[k]My purpose from a distant country.
Truly I have ^(X)spoken; truly I will bring it to pass.
I have planned it, I will certainly do it.

¹²“^(Y)Listen to Me, you ^(Z)stubborn-minded,
Who are ^(AA)far from righteousness.
¹³I ^(AB)bring near My righteousness, it is not far off;
And My salvation will not delay.
And I will grant ^(AC)salvation in Zion,
And My ^(AD)glory for Israel.

²^(A)And six days later Jesus *took with Him ^(B)Peter, ^[a]James, and John, and *brought them up on a high mountain by themselves. And He was ^[b]transfigured before them; ³and ^(C)His garments became radiant and exceedingly white, as no launderer on earth can whiten them. ⁴And Elijah appeared to them along with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus. ⁵Peter responded and *said to Jesus, “^(D)Rabbi, it is good that we are here; ^(E)let’s make three ^[c]tabernacles, one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” ⁶For he did not know how to reply; for they became terrified. ⁷Then a cloud ^[d]formed, overshadowing them, and ^(F)a voice ^[e]came out of the cloud: “^(G)This is My beloved Son; ^[f]listen to Him!” ⁸And suddenly they looked around and saw no one with them anymore, except Jesus alone.

⁹^(H)As they were coming down from the mountain, He ^(I)gave them orders not to relate to anyone what they had seen, ^[g]until the Son of Man rose from the dead. ¹⁰They ^[h]seized upon ^[i]that statement, discussing with one another ^[j]what rising from the dead meant. ¹¹And they asked Him, saying, “Why is it that the scribes say that ^(J)Elijah must come first?” ¹²And He said to them, “Elijah does come first and he restores all things. And yet how is it written of ^(K)the Son of Man that ^(L)He will suffer many things and be treated with contempt? ¹³But I say to you that Elijah has ^[k]indeed come, and they did to him whatever they wanted, just as it is written of him.”

All Things Possible

¹⁴^(M)And when they came back to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them, and some scribes arguing with them. ¹⁵Immediately, when the entire crowd saw Him, they were ^(N)amazed and began running up to greet Him. ¹⁶And He asked them, “What are you disputing with them?” ¹⁷And one person from the crowd answered Him, “Teacher, I brought You my son, because he has a spirit that makes him unable to speak; ¹⁸and ^[l]whenever it seizes him, it slams him to the ground, and he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and becomes stiff. And I told Your disciples so that they would cast it out, but they could not do it.” ¹⁹And He answered them and *said, “O unbelieving generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him to Me!” ²⁰And they brought ^[m]the boy to Him. When he saw Him, the spirit immediately threw him into convulsions, and falling to the ground, he began rolling around and foaming at the mouth. ²¹And He asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. ²²It has often thrown him both into the fire and into the water to kill him. But if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!” ²³But Jesus said to him, “‘If You can?’ ^(O)All things are possible for the one who believes.” ²⁴Immediately the boy’s father cried out and said, “I do believe; help my unbelief!” ²⁵When Jesus saw that ^(P)a crowd was ^[n]rapidly gathering, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I ^[o]command you, come out of him and do not enter him ^[p]again!” ²⁶And after crying out and throwing him into terrible convulsions, it came out; and the boy became so much like a corpse that most of them said, “He is dead!” ²⁷But Jesus took him by the hand and raised him, and he got up. ²⁸When He came ^(Q)into the house, His disciples began asking Him privately, “Why is it that we could not cast it out?” ²⁹And He said to them, “This kind cannot come out by anything except prayer.”

Death and Resurrection Foretold

³⁰^(R)And from there they went out and began to go through Galilee, and He did not want anyone to know about it. ³¹For He was teaching His disciples and telling them, “^(S)The Son of Man is to be ^[q]handed over to men, and they will kill Him; and when He has been killed, He will rise three days later.” ³²But ^(T)they ^[r]did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask Him.

Mourning for Babylon

47 “^(A)Come down and sit in the dust,
^(B)Virgin ^(C)daughter of Babylon;
Sit on the ground without a throne,
Daughter of the Chaldeans!
For you will no longer be called ^(D)tender and delicate.
²Take the ^(E)millstones and ^(F)grind flour.
Remove your ^(G)veil, ^(H)strip off the skirt,
Uncover the leg, cross the rivers.
³Your ^(I)nakedness will be uncovered,
Your shame will also be exposed;
I will ^(J)take vengeance and will not spare anyone.”
⁴Our ^(K)Redeemer, the Lord of armies is His name,
The Holy One of Israel.
⁵“^(L)Sit silently, and go into ^(M)darkness,
Daughter of the Chaldeans;
For you will no longer be called
The ^(N)queen of ^(O)kingdoms.
⁶I was angry with My people,
I profaned My heritage
And handed them over to you.
You did not show mercy to them,
On the ^(P)aged you made your yoke very heavy.
⁷Yet you said, ‘I will be a ^(Q)queen forever.’
These things you did not ^(R)consider
Nor remember the ^(S)outcome of ^[a]them.

⁸“Now, then, hear this, you ^(T)luxuriant one,
Who ^(U)lives securely,
Who says in her heart,
‘^(V)I am, and there is no one besides me.
I will ^(W)not sit as a widow,
Nor know the loss of children.’
⁹But these ^(X)two things will come on you ^(Y)suddenly in one day:
Loss of children and widowhood.
They will come on you in full measure
In spite of your many ^(Z)sorceries,
In spite of the great power of your spells.
¹⁰You felt ^(AA)secure in your wickedness and said,
‘^(AB)No one sees me,’
Your ^(AC)wisdom and your knowledge, ^[b]they have led you astray;
For you have said in your heart,
‘^(AD)I am, and there is no one besides me.’
¹¹But ^(AE)evil will come on you
Which you will not know how to charm away;
And disaster will fall on you
For which you cannot atone;
And ^(AF)destruction about which you do not know
Will come on you ^(AG)suddenly.

¹²“Persist now in your ^(AH)spells
And in your many sorceries
With which you have labored from your youth;
Perhaps you will be able to benefit,
Perhaps you may cause trembling.
¹³You are ^(AI)wearied with your many counsels;
Let now the ^(AJ)astrologers,
Those who prophesy by the stars,
Those who predict by the new moons,
Stand up and ^(AK)save you from what will come upon you.
¹⁴Behold, they have become ^(AL)like stubble,
^(AM)Fire burns them;
They cannot save themselves from the power of the flame;
There will be ^(AN)no coal to warm by
Nor a fire to sit before!
¹⁵So have those become to you with whom you have labored,
Those who have ^(AO)done business with you from your youth;
Each has wandered in his own ^[c]way;
There is ^(AP)no one to save you.

The New Heaven and Earth

21 Then I saw ^(A)a new heaven and a new earth; for ^(B)the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. ²And I saw ^(C)the holy city, ^(D)new Jerusalem, ^(E)coming down out of heaven from God, ^(F)prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. ³And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, ^(G)the tabernacle of God is among the people, and He will ^(H)dwell among them, and they shall be His ^[a]people, and God Himself will be among them^[b], ⁴and He will ^(I)wipe away every tear from their eyes; and ^(J)there will no longer be any death; ^(K)there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; ^(L)the first things have passed away.”

⁵And ^(M)He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am ^(N)making all things new.” And He *said, “Write, for ^(O)these words are faithful and true.” ⁶Then He said to me, “^[c]^(P)It is done. I am the ^(Q)Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. ^(R)I will give water to the one who thirsts from the spring of the ^(S)water of life, without cost. ⁷^(T)The one who overcomes will inherit these things, and ^(U)I will be his God and he will be My son. ⁸^(V)But for the cowardly, and ^[d]unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and sexually immoral persons, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, their part will be in ^(W)the lake that burns with fire and ^[e]brimstone, which is the ^(X)second death.”

⁹^(Y)Then one of the seven angels who had the ^(Z)seven bowls, ^[f]full of the ^(AA)seven last plagues, came and spoke with me, saying, “^(AB)Come here, I will show you the ^(AC)bride, the wife of the Lamb.”

The New Jerusalem

¹⁰And ^(AD)he carried me away ^[g]^(AE)in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me ^(AF)the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, ¹¹having ^(AG)the glory of God. Her ^[h]brilliance was like a very valuable stone, like a ^(AH)stone of ^(AI)crystal-clear jasper. ¹²^[i]It had a great and high wall, ^[j]^(AJ)with twelve ^(AK)gates, and at the gates twelve angels; and names were written on the gates, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel. ¹³There were three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west. ¹⁴And the wall of the city had ^(AL)twelve foundation stones, and on them were the twelve names of the ^(AM)twelve apostles of the Lamb.
